I use 16 gauge welded wire. The wire is cut with electric sheers so there are no points sticking out. However the wire can still be sharp so I cover all raw edges with edge guard. Some of my pictures were taken a few years ago before I started putting the edge guard on the very bottom edges. I found these edges would snag the carpet when the cage was removed from the aquarium, so now I cover them. All openings, doorways, and ramps are covered also.
You get to choose the color edge guard you want: Blue, Red, Purple, Beige, Gray or Black.
